No Gays in Iran?

Last month Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared that “In Iran, we don’t have homosexuals," receiving laughter from an American audience. Yesterday an aide said that Mr. Ahmadinejad had been misunderstood.

"The president actually meant there aren't many gays in Iran," the aide clarified. "But the ones we have are so highly valued they're often hung up for everybody to see."

No Gays in Iran?

I actually grew up in Iran and knew quite a few gay people while I was there. I lived in a huge city, so there were no executions, but it was still very hush-hush and no one EVER directly addressed it. Even family members wouldn't dare to admit that their sibling/son/daughter was gay to their best friends, not because they were ashamed (though I'm sure there was an element of that as well), but mostly because they were afraid of the information eventually getting out to the wrong people. Most of the lucky gays hightail it to LA if they're able to, which adds to the illusion of "no gays" in Iran.

Anyway, Ahmadinejad is a moron. Like everyone else who runs that country.
