I want to be the kind of person who puts his groceries into empty spaces in the refrigerator, not the kind who sets things down in the very front and then shoves.

Me too. But you know the old saying, "once a shover, always a shover."
Well that's easy, shove FIRST and THEN put your stuff in the empty spaces. Which are now in front. Actually if you could take the back off the fridge so all the stuff that gets pushed off the back of the shelf fell right into the trash can, you might have a million-dollar idea there.
