Well, how else can they indicate that they're gay? Of course they must act effeminate. It's like when they cast black people, they say "must eat watermelon and have a perpetual shit-eatin' grin" or Jews who "must have hooked nose and avaricious facial expressions."
Oh wait, is that what they mean by "subtext"?
